I have often wondered what the benefit of manual transmission in a car is. If you don’t need to do all that gear shifting and use three pedals on the floor, then why do it? I set out to find why cars were still made with manual transmissions and if there was a benefit other than making it more difficult for anyone to borrow or steal your car.
Cars with manual transmissions get better fuel economy than the automatic transmission cars. The difference in gas mileage has actually decreased with the newer automatics that have locking torque converters. However the gas mileage between a properly operated manual and automatic transmission can range from 5% to 15% based on the style of driving and driving conditions. Manuals do not require active cooking and also weigh less than automatic transmissions. A manual couples the engine to the transmission with a rigid clutch instead of a torque converter the automatic transmission uses. A torque converter slips by nature. Manuals also lack the power consumption of the automatic transmission’s hydraulic pump.
