How to Interchange your Air Filter

Your car uses a variety of filters to keep everything running smoothly. There are filters for the air entering the engine and cabin. Oil and fuel filters work to keep debris from contaminating your car’s engine components. While it’s inevitable that all these filters will need to be replaced eventually, it’s good to know the symptoms of a failing filter, as well as whether or not they can be cleaned so you don’t have to buy a new one. Who doesn’t like to spend less money on vehicle maintenance?

Air Filter: Your car’s air filters are made out of a variety of materials, including paper, foam, and cotton. They work to filter debris like dust, pollen, smog, and other contaminants from getting into your car. The intake air filter, found inside the engine compartment, prevents debris from getting inside your engine and interfering with it’s function. A cabin air filter is usually found behind the glove compartment, or tucked next to the pedals on the driver’s side.

Cleaning the air filter in your automobile is a significant portion of preserving your vehicle. The air filter aids to control the air that drives into your engine.

The dry air filter will be made of paper or cotton gauze. Dry air filters tend to get dirty faster but they are also easier to clean than oiled air filters. The dry air filter will be under the hood of your car, on top of the engine. The filter will be housed in a rectangular or round box. You may need to remove the lid of the housing to take out the filter. There may be wingnuts or clamps that you need to remove. Use a screwdriver to remove the wingnuts or remove the clamps with your fingers. Then, pull the filter out of the housing.

After the air filter has dried, you will need to re oil it so it can work properly. Apply filter oil to the filter. Follow the estimated amount of oil for your filter type on the label. Let the filter oil absorb into the filter for five to ten minutes.
