Do You Need to Replace Your Belts?

There are lots of pulleys spinning around under your hood. Engine designers are ingenious in the number of accessories they have managed to bolt onto the front of the engine, drawing their energy from the incredible power of that spinning crankshaft. Everything from the water pump to the air conditioning. But let’s not get too poetic about it. All of those pulleys need belts to transfer the energy from the crank pulley, and those belts wear out with all of their spinning, heating, cooling, stretching and shrinking. It’s important to inspect your belts every season to be sure you don’t have any worn, frayed or stretched belts.

Always proceed with caution and safety is the foremost goal in this endeavor. Special mention to this post.

Looking for the best Timing Belt Information and Replacement Intervals? Good thing this is just what the doctor ordered. Special mention to Matthew Wright.

The timing belt is one of the most important parts of your car. It keeps your engine working properly, and when it breaks, the results can be catastrophic.

Your timing belt should be replaced every 50,000-70,000 miles, depending on your car’s make and model. Not all cars having a timing belt, so check your manual to see if this applies to you.

Also, make sure you understand what type of engine you have: an interference engine or non-interference.

In an interference engine, the valves and piston share the same air space. They never touch, unless your timing belt breaks or skips, and this is a huge failure that requires removing the head and replacing bent valves. Such a repair can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
